Pre-feasibility study for new Demerara River Bridge set to begin

The new board for the Demerara Harbour Bridge Inc., (DHB) was constituted on Thursday. At that ceremony at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, its members were informed that the pre-feasibility study for a new bridge across the Demerara River is set to commence shortly.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Annette Ferguson during the presentation of the appointment letters to the board’s members explained that, “The prefeasibility study for the Demerara Harbour Bridge is now in place as scheduled …. I trust that your initiative or the ideas that you have you would be able to put it forward so that we can have whatever plans we have in place for that new bridge.”

The Minister pointed out that it calls for “hard work” as she congratulated the board members for accepting their appointments.

The DHB, since its establishment has under its belt an asphalt plant, which is said to be generating a generous amount of revenue. Minister Ferguson is of the hope that the newly appointed board will generate fresh ideas to enhance the day to day task and revenue of the asphalt plant. “I trust that with your ideas, we would be able to have new ideas to see how best we can better improve the asphalt operations,” the Minister said.

It was related to the board members that over the years there have been a number of constraints to passengers, which the Minister hopes will be resolved by the new board.

Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson also urged the new board members to keep in mind that they have an obligation to the general public which they must fulfill.

The new DHB board members are as follows:
• Shabir Hussain – Chairman
• Joseph Holder- Vice Chairman
• Rafeza Hussein- Member
• Claudette Rogers- Member
• Mandy Sukhdeo- Member
• Union Representative- Member (yet to be named)
• Rawlston Adams- Ex-Officio Member
