[www.inewsguyana.cm] – General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Clement Rohee has made it pellucid that the Party will not contest the long overdue Local Government Elections (LGE) if Dr Steve Surujbally is still Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

When asked about the issue at a press conference on Monday, June 15, Rohee said, “Not with Mr Surujbally. We’ve already called for Mr Surujbally’s resignation. We want Mr Surjubally’s resignation almost immediately.

After losing the May 11 general and regional elections to the APNU+AFC coalition, the PPP/C have accused Dr Surujbally and GECOM of working in collusion with the coalition to rig the elections.

The PPP has since mounted several protests, calling for the Chairman’s resignation. In a May 18 press statement, the PPP/C had expressed that it no longer has confidence in Dr Surujbally, who has been Chairman of the elections Body for approximately 10 years.

The PPP/C was unseated from 23 years of government by the APNU+AFC coalition but did not accept defeat, citing a flawed electoral process. Local government elections were last held in 1994.

It has been a contentious issue ever since, with the former PPP government being heavily criticized for not holding the elections, even though the former President had promised to do so.

The new government has since made the very promise to hold the elections sometime this year.

  1. The irony of this statement is OH so amusing. Here there are complaining about “witch-hunts and vindictive firings” and they are calling for someone to be fired merely for political reasons. These guys need to be calm and thread lightly or else a “fourth” viable political party will emerge from their incompetence — just as the AFC did — and splinter the 200k+ base. I smell a civil war in the party coming.

I wouldn’t think young professional PPP supporters would continue to embrace this brand of politics for too long.

  2. there has to be some or strategy to stop the ppp from continuing to fool its followers, they r still filling the supperters with lies, telling them that what they are doing is creating problems for the Govt.Itseems that they have no problems, all the problems now is with the present Govt.Their supporters strongly believe that we will fail and it is because of them

  3. What a bunch of children. These are the people who would like to represent the electorate? Sad. If I’m not getting to bat I’m leaving with my ball. School yard brats!!!. Go sit down someplace and do Guyana and Guyanese a favor. I suppose all those who voted for them during the election does not matter. It is this same disregard for the populace that is reflected in their management of the country and its resources.

  4. rohee, singh, jagdeo, romator, you bunch are so pathetic it is sickening. you people have no share. you behave as if Guyana belongs to the pilfering pick pocket (ppp) regime. It makes my stomach sick to look at the bunch of you. You pillage the peoples assets/monies and you have to gall to call others names. That’s rich coming from a buch of naked crooks. Surujbally isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so get that thru you no brains head.

  5. Let them sulk and go in a corner and suck their thumb! Perhaps they should adopt the same view that they hold against “forensic audits”; and alleged “witch hunts”.Where is the beef”?? (Ie::proof)

  6. Mr. Rohee I am ashamed of your attitude and disrespect for Mr. Surjubally. if you live another 100 years you will never rise to the level of respect, integrity and honesty as Mr. Surjubally. Be the man you claim to be accept your defeat get up and fight again. Only this time put the people first and I mean all the people of Guyana.

  7. Great, less square pegs in round holes. PPP covering their asses for a poor showing. Surujbally wan’t a problem last 2 elections which saw the PPP winning, but suddenly he is!

  8. When you were asked to step aside and rightly so, after a No confidence motion was passed by the then Majority opposition, did you heed the motion? So why should this man resign to appease a bunch of people who the Guyanese people rejected? Don’t contest the elections then that would make it better for civil society members to run. I believe the best thing for you folks to do is disappear!
