- Calls on Granger-led government for ‘comprehensive, truthful’ update on disaster
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has expressed its “utter shock and horror” at the tragedy which, from all indications, is still ongoing at the Camp Street Prisons in Georgetown. So far, at least sixteen persons have died and several are seriously injured.
The PPP, in a statement, said “this virtual rebellion within the prison walls is the worst of its kind in recent history”.
According to the PPP, the incident started following a police raid at the prison and the discovery of a number of illegal items. Later, in protesting the raid, a fire was started and escalated into a riot.
“The Granger-led administration must take full responsibility for this disaster…We call upon the Government to provide the nation with a comprehensive and truthful update on what transpired,” the PPP posited.
It said a Board of Inquiry must be established immediately to investigate the circumstances that led to this sorry state of affairs at the Georgetown Prisons.
“We will have much more to say on this matter as the situation unfolds,” the PPP stated.
