Meten-Meer-Zorg hit and run: Causing death accused granted $300,000 bail

The man who allegedly struck and killed 61-year-old Mohammed Ashraff of  155 East Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was Tuesday granted bail for the offense when he appeared at the Vreed-en-hoop Magistrates’ Courts.

The accused, Asif Azeez denied the accusations made and pleaded not guilty to the three charges read to him by Magistrate Christel Lambert.

He denied that on September 20 at Meten-Meer-Zorg, Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD) he drove dangerously thereby causing the death of Ashraff.

He further denied that, he, on the same day at the same location failed to render assistance to the said Ashraff. And the final charge alleges that the accused failed to stop after the accident.

Magistrate Lambert granted bail in the sum of $300,000 for the causing death charge and placed the defendant on self-bail for the other offenses.

He is expected to reappear in Court on October 31 2017.

The body of Ashraff was discovered around 06:30hrs in a shallow drain with head injuries suspected to be from a vehicular accident.

Twenty six year old, Azeez, of Seafield Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was later arrested after CCTV footage showed him placing the deceased in the shallow drain after hitting him.

He told investigators that he was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the Meten-Meer-Zorg Public Road in motor car PMM 321 when the vehicle suddenly veered south and he struck an object but failed to stop.

As such he was charged with the offense.
