Man in ‘fowl cock row’ murder remanded to prison

Mark AssinMark Assing was today remanded to prison by Chief magistrate Priya Beharry, following a charge of murder.

Assing of Mc Doom Village, East Bank Demerara was not required to plead to the charge which read that on June 20 at Mc Doom Village he murdered Abiola Edie.

The accused was represented by Attorney-at-Law Peter Hugh who asked the Magistrate for an early to date to commence trial. Assing is to make his next court appearance on July 09 for report and fixture.

Assing was wanted by the police since the incident took place. However, he was arrested yesterday, Thursday July 4 at Wales, East Bank Demeara.

On June 20, last, Abiola Edie and her son, Martin Barker, of McDoom, East Bank Demerara were shot by their neighbour. Barker was accused of putting his game cock to fight his neighbour’s roosters.

The young man’s mother came out to defend him but the argument got heated and their neighbour went into his house, collected his gun and allegedly shot Barker twice. Eddie was also shot in her face.

Barker was treated at GPHC and was eventually discharged but his mother succumbed to her injuries.
