[www.inewsguyana.com] – Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud says that he will not announce a date for the holding of local government elections unless he is satisfied that all preparations are in place.

Persaud told a media conference on Friday, January 10 that the various stakeholders have commenced educating the public with regards to the elections, even though a date has not been set.

He pointed out that the ministry itself has concluded its first round of training, which targeted Regional Democratic Councillors, Neighbourhood Democratic Councillors and other stakeholders.

Minister Persaud also noted that the Guyana Elections Commission has begun its Public Relations campaign, as well as political parties. The last local government elections were held approximately nineteen years ago. The four local government Bills were passed in the National Assembly on August 7.

However, only three of them received the assent of President Donald Ramotar.
