Former Guyanese Head of State and now Opposition Leader, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, has slammed the Government for its decision to shut down the Wales Sugar Estate, a decision which will affect thousands of persons living along the West Bank of Demerara.

Mr. Jagdeo said it was a reprehensible action by the APNU+AFC Administration which “shows that the Government cannot be trusted”, in reference to a statement made by Minister of State Joseph Harmon in December last assuring the public that no sugar estate would be closed.
According to the former President, the 2015 sugar CoI report commissioned by the APNU/AFC coalition does not recommend any such closure.
“The Government precipitously moved to this hasty closure and this is consistent with what I have always spoken about: a sinister plan, a surreptitious plan to close the sugar industry. I thought at least it would be more subtle and they were using privatisation,” he commented.
INews understands that the former President is slated to meet with workers of Wales estate sometime today.

  1. Of course she has the right to speak out. This sort of bullieism must stop and very soon. Guyana is on the verge of history repeating itself where mainly the indians will be the main target.

  2. On May 08 1973 the PNC dictatorship send out it’s Minister of Economic Development, dr. Kenneth King, to announce the “Feed, Clothe and house the Nation” which miserably failed. At that time the Dictatorship was promoting “grow and eat” don’t import anything and so major food stuff was banned.
Now this same PNC is closing down business, Examples: These square pegs in round holes tried their best to close the Berbice Bridge, wants to sell Marriott, To closed down GUYSUCO, starting with wales.
Where is Moses Nagamoottoo the rubber stamp who said he will never see Guysuco closed? Shame on the PNC!

sorry jag u cant do nothing for these people..
from jagan to ramotar used to take these people for granted
you nor any ppp member can deny you did nothing for these people but give them a hand out every now and then to get their votes while you were pumping trillions of their tax dollars dollars into pnc stronghold villages…how much you said you pumped into linden the last 10 years ? 10 B $$$ ????
yall did all infrastructure work in pnc stronghold to win their minds their hearts but most importantly their votes and yall get larwah from them..
jag you should be trying to secure visas for these people since pnc will run them our one way or another.

  5. You mean the Venezuela “Welfare” on rice? That my friend was unsustainable and would have soon ended. Those “sweetened” short term “welfare” handouts would have had serious long term consequences.

With no more sweeteners, the farmers are forced to be innovative. The must look for ways to lower cost while at the same time increase yields

  6. It is very sad that Granger and company made bad with ALL their neighbors in favor of the ABC countries. What the PNC regime does not understand is economic skills because most of the PNC ministers are living in the 70s….the ABC countries will NOT buy rice and Sugar from Guyana because north america uses way to much artificial products as replacement. Making bad with the countries that were buying your products seems to be one of the worst mistake made by the PNC regime which will force Guyana to go Bankrupt soon!
