The Guyana Power and Light [GPL] is in the process of verifying a list of pensioners who are eligible to be granted a yearly subsidy of $20,000 to help with electricity expenses.

Chief Executive Officer Bharat Dindyal noted that the company received a list from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and is now matching it with their database.

Dindyal says that the list comprises of pensioners from Regions, two, three, four, five, six and seven.

He says they have contacted the Guyana Water Inc. seeking advice on how they go about identifying the pensioners since in cases the names and address of the pensioners did not match.

In this regard Dindyal explained that in the coming weeks the company will be calling customers to verify when they find a watch.

Parliament this year approved a move for government to pay part of the GPL Bill for pensioners as part of the 2013 budget.

This amounted to $20,000 annually or $1,666 monthly. In addition Government has also been assisting pensioners with their water charges. [Akash Ramlackhan]
