[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) says it is ready to meet the electricity demand during the holiday season.

Customers are being assured of adequate power supply during the season by GPL’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) Aeshwar Deonarine.

He explained that the greater demand for power is expected during the evening hours when the demand goes up to about 79 megawatts in Demerara.  Deonarine added that as Christmas draws near, GPL is anticipating a further increase in the vicinity of 82 megawatts.

The Deputy CEO says GPL has the capacity to generate in the Demerara grid 90 megawatts of power.

Deonarine has also assured that GPL’s emergency crews will be on standby to respond to any case of power failure or any other problems during the season.

He said the power company has been replacing defective utility poles and transformers to ensure safe and efficient transmission and distribution.

GPL in an advisory on December 4 said it is scheduled to complete all Transmission and Distribution (T&D) inclusive of Line Maintenance and Generation Planned Maintenance activities on December 14, 2013.

According to GPL’s Network Manager, Shaun Hamlet, GPL’s Technical Staff is working around-the-clock to complete all maintenance works for the holiday seasons.

The Company is at the same time appealing to customers to conserve electricity. As the demand for electricity increases during the festive season, GPL customers are known to suffer, as the power fluctuates frequently.
