[www.inewsguyana.com] – Daniel Gaskin of West Coast Berbice’s (District 5) comfortably topped the favoured Matthew McKenzie to win the 10k road run as the School National Championships began on a high note this morning, Tuesday, November 18.

The 14- year – old Gaskin clocked 35 minutes and 51 seconds to take gold as McKenzie of District 11 (North Georgetown), who was seen as the top dog in the race fell to third for bronze with a time of 36:57s.

Corentyne’s (District 6) Owin Tudor finished in second for the silver medal with a time of 36:35.

The race started with a slow pace just outside of GT&T on Carifesta Avenue as the athletes seemed contented in cruising.

However, on the way down, Tudor and Gaskin made their move around the Ocean View Hotel leaving McKenzie in their dust as Gaskin eventually won the race inside of the National Park.

On the distaff side, Rupununi’s Semona Lawrence outdid her opponents to win the female version of the race in 41 minutes and 55 seconds.

Delicia Harper of Berbice was second in 43:35s while Mariah McKenzie was third in a time of 44:39s to round out the top three finishers.

The event will continue tomorrow, Wednesday, November 19 at the Guyana Defence Force ground, Base Camp Ayanganna with the opening ceremony from 09:00h.
