Excavator operator dies during accident at worksite

The Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department received a report on Sunday 4th February, 2024, of a workplace fatality which occurred at Guyana Shield Resources Incorporated, Dora, East Bank Demerara.

An investigation, led by Mr. Darwin Bourne, Senior Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Officer, began on Sunday afternoon with a visit to the accident site for an inspection and meetings with the employer, Mr. Hilbert Shields, and other staff members.

It was reported that Mr. Lennox McPherson, a resident of Cinderella City, Linden, an excavator operator employed by the company lost his life during the late early hours of Sunday when he was pinned by a Doosan Excavator Bucket against the track of an excavator just outside a sandpit at Dora on the East Bank of Demerara.

The Honourable Minister of Labour Mr. Joseph Hamilton MP, continues to express his concern about workplace accidents and encourages both employers and workers to employ good workplace safety and health practices on the job. Further he extends his condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased.

The investigation is continuing.
