[www.inewsguyana.com]The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc says the late Kirk Bacchus of Paradise Village, East Coast Demerara who was shot dead by police in Meten-Meer-Zorg, West coast Demerara on Monday (September 16) while attempting to commit a robbery is not an employee of the power company.

Bacchus at the time of his death was wearing a GPL T-shirt and as such was believed to be an employee of the power company. GPL is advising the public that whilst most of the Company’s field workers wear shirts with GPL’s logo, all workers are required to wear in a conspicuous place a GPL identification card which must be presented to customers when employees conduct the Company’s business.

The power company adds that before allowing any GPL’s employee to act on the Company’s behalf, customers should ensure that the nature of the business to be transacted is stated clearly before the commencement of task.

It says, “Should the person(s) fail to produce authentic ID from the GPL, or if a customer wishes to confirm the authenticity of the employee, they can call the emergency call centre on telephone numbers  592-226-4015/16 or send SMS to 600 -4GPL (4475).”

Bacchus was shot dead, while two others are in police custody and another on the run after they invaded the Kastev Housing Scheme, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, with the intention to commit a robbery.

According to the police, ranks acted on information received which indicated that an armed robbery was planned and staked out an area when at about 10:00 hours, two motor vehicles, bearing number plates HB 7644 and PPP 9366, drove up and four men, two of whom were armed with handguns exited the vehicles.

Police ranks said they challenged the men who responded by opening fire on them resulting in the fatal wounding of Bacchus. iNews was however informed that one of the men in custody has also been injured.

Residents, some of whom had locked themselves in their houses as the incident unfolded, told iNews that the dead gunman posed at a Guyana Power and Light employee and is believed to have been shot two times in the region of the chest.

Police said a 9mm. pistol with two live rounds was recovered while the fourth man who is yet to be apprehended is armed with the other firearm. The motor vehicles were seized by the police
