A Guyanese model was jailed for four years by Magistrate Leron Daley when she appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Sadeeka Leona Odi, of Lot 186 Thomas Street, Kitty, who was charged for trafficking in narcotics, had initially pleaded not guilty to the offence when she made her first appearance before then Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

It was alleged that on February 8, 2014, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), the 41-year-old woman was found to be in possession of 9.27 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in mango achar.

She was subsequently remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

During the trial, the prosecution called three witnesses who gave evidence in the matter against the model of a local arts school and a mother of five.

The Court heard that Odi was an outgoing passenger on a flight destined for New York’s John F Kennedy Airport.  Based on information received, ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) took her off the aircraft and conducted a search of her suitcase; the drug was then found concealed in the achar.

Odi was represented by Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd.
