Chanderpaul no longer good enough to play for West Indies – Holding

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Michael Holding, the former West Indies fast bowler, has backed the chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd’s logic of jettisoning Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the Australia series. Holding said that Chanderpaul, who has managed 183 runs in his last 11 innings at 16.64, was no longer good enough to be picked for West Indies.

“I don’t believe that cricketers should just get a series for getting a series sake. I don’t think Shivnarine Chanderpaul has proven in recent times that he is still a good enough player to be playing for West Indies,” Holding told ESPNcricinfo. “He has done yeoman service for over two decades. West Indies should be happy to have had him playing for them for that long. All good things have to come to an end.

“I saw him play against South Africa recently and he certainly did not look like the Shivnarine Chanderpaul that I was accustomed to seeing. He was a little bit slow with his reactions to the fast bowlers and we know what Australia are going to be bringing.”

Holding also echoed Lloyd’s sentiment of making way for youth though it would take time to fill the Chanderpaul-sized void.

“Chanderpaul has to make way for someone younger. The person that comes in obviously is not going to fill Chanderpaul’s shoes immediately. He has done so much good work for West Indies. But it is time for someone younger than him who can grow into those shoes.”

While Chanderpaul’s former team-mate, Brian Lara, criticised the ‘despicable’ treatment meted out to Chanderpaul and called for a farewell series akin to the one arranged by the BCCI for Sachin Tendulkar, Holding said that he had “no problems” with the way the WICB had dealt with the issue. Chanderpaul is just 86 short of equalling Lara’s record of being the highest West Indian run-scorer in Tests.

“From what I have heard I don’t think anybody can complain. From what I heard they called him, had a meeting with him. They told him exactly what they would like to do and I have no problems with that,” Holding said.

“I don’t think Chanderpaul is ever going to be one to say, ‘listen, my time has come and I have to move on’. So they have done the right thing.”

When asked about the legacy left behind by Chanderpaul, Holding said: “Chanderpaul’s legacy will be someone who went and played for West Indies and gave his all for a very long time. To show everyone that if you can go out and work hard, if you have deficiencies in technique and you work hard enough, you can produce the goods.” [Cricinfo]

  1. Mr Lloyd and Mr Simmons you have done West Indies proud. June 3 @2.15 pm West indies batting 133 for 8. How can you rebuild against the best bowling attack in the world. Or they trying to kill these youngsters career. I am sure the tiger would stand up to that bowling attack . Now you guys would face the blunt of more criticism.

  2. While i may not agree wigh every aspect that eventually saw the axing of WI greats, omcluding Shiv, i do agree that all good things do come to an end sometime and Shiv’s time is now. No way, at 40 and counting can he continue indefinitely. There needs to be time and space to groom a successor, an uphill task considering the role he patiently played year in and out. However, I, in support of Brian Lara’s position believe a series shoild be organised specifically to his honour, and from which his scores shall be officially recorded for whatever purppses.

  3. I agree with Wavell Hinds and WIPA…Michael Holding was not honest and did not answer honestly and that is a shame he jumped on the band wagon because it’s the place to be right now.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul is a living legend for caribbean cricket and cricket around the world, he didnt go out and do a day job…he went out and played a game and almost everytime put on a show and give us the caribbean people something to cheer about.
Can you imagine not playing him in this test series at home
cricket will never be the same you jokers will have to sit in the stands and cheer yourselves on

Mikey you are a disappointment to to caribbean cricket and people.
Furthermore talk about age the selection Panel is too old… You jokers need to resign!

Really Micky that is all you had to say about Shiv’s legacy
My list go on and onto long to list here of his legacy but then again it comes back to honesty and you were not.
Think of all the young people watching and listening to you…SHAME ON YOU!

  4. what is happening to people, they are looking at Chandra with sentiments not with his ability to play, those who are there should know better so i agree with Holdng.Instead of discussing the issue people are discussing Holding and Lara’s record, how silly.Chandra is 40 not 30 so at some time he had to go,all good things must have an end but like some people do not realise that, but he must play until he wants to resign and ths is bad

  5. Michael Holding you should shut your mouth what history u have in cricket u like to talk and bad talk people ass hold. everybody do not know u but everybody knows shiv because of his discipline towards WEST INDIES.

  6. Mikie I have to disagree. Personally shiv is still d best player westindies has. His record against Australia spraks for itself and I believe alot has to do with not wanting him to break the record coz if he does he will hold that record for decades to come… clive is no longer a good enough leader and likewise u r no longer a good enough commentator…jus sayin

  7. CHANDRAPAUL HAS DONE HIS PART AND I THINK THE TIME HAS DEFINITELY COME FOR HIM TO THROW IN THE TOWEL. WHAT YOU GUYS THINK?????????????????

  8. A lot of drivel.” Deficiences in technique” and lasting 21 years, facing the best thrown at him. I wont listen to your commentaries anymore. Your deficiency is exposed. Harry.

  9. “I don’t believe that cricketers should just get a series for getting a series sake”.

“All good things have to come to an end”.

I AGREE WITH MR HOLDING. Mr Chanderpaul should be thinking about grooming his son to hopefully replace him. Its about time we put this matter to rest.

  10. This is utterly ridiculous, no longer good enough to play for WI, this is so disrespectful. Chanderpaul has been the most consistent dedicated player and this is how he is treated just shameful
