Car wash owner remanded for possession of marijuana

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Thirty-nine-year old Sheldon Browne of Lot 65 Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for being in possession of 54 grams of marijuana.

Browne, who told the Court that he was a beverage retailer and the operator of a carwash, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on March 24, he had the illegal substance in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru revealed on that on the day in question, Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks conducted a search on Browne’s home after they received a tip.

During the search, ranks discovered the illegal substance in a passageway leading to the defendant’s apartment. The Court heard that the defendant made an oral confession to the marijuana at the scene of the discovery.

Under caution he told the police that, “it’s lil old weed I forget up there”.

His Lawyer, Paul Fung-A-Fat explained that his client is a tenant at the building and there are six other persons residing on the premises. He argued that there is no nexus between his client and the drugs.

Brown was denied bailed and is set to appear before Magistrate Fabayo Azore on April 20.
