[www.inewsguyana.com] – Pugilists from nine gyms and overseas-based Guyanese will compete at the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Open Championships at California Square, East Ruimveldt scheduled for this weekend.

“It’s the main competition of the year and it guarantees the national champions one year bragging rights. What we are hoping for this year is the emergence of new champions. We will be having 10 divisions in the Elite category where the boxers will be fighting without headgear, so we can expect some fireworks. All the gyms are ready and raring to go, so see you there,” Technical Director of the GBA, Terrence Poole highlighted at a press conference on Wednesday, October 22.

The championships will feature overseas-based Guyanese, Quincy Small who will be competing in Guyana for the first time.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge and I’m also looking to give the people a show,” the boxer also known as ‘Biggy’ stated.

The boxers will be fighting without head gear and will have to use Cavilon cream as highlighted by President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle.

The gyms that have confirmed their participation are Harpy Eagle, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Young Achievers, Carryl’s, Essequibo, Republican, Rose Hall Town Jammers, Guyana Defence Force and Police.
