Body of missing engineer found in Demerara river

The body of a man found at Supply Village in the Demerara river on Tuesday around 12:00hr was positively identified as that of a 34-year-old engineer.

Dead is Neil Sookram of lot 18 Caines Street Meadow Bank Georgetown.

According to information reaching this publication the engineer went missing between Monday 30, July 2018 and Tuesday 31, July 2018, at JSB investment Stone Yard and Wharf, located at Block R Soesdyke Public Road East Bank Demerara (EBD).

He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while working on a boat docked at the wharf.

His colleague, Marcini Grosvenor, a sailor, told investigators that the engineer came on the boat about 00:30hrs on Monday, appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, and asked him for them to go and have a few more beers.

The sailor said that he refused and Sookram left the cabin and was never seen again.

INews was informed that after the body was retrieved on Tuesday, it was examined but no marks of violence were found.

Sookram’s body was later identified by his Aunt Annette Sookram a shopkeeper of Caines Street, Meadow Bank, Georgetown and is presently at the Lyken’s funeral home awaiting a postmortem examination.
