[www.inewsguyana.com] – Employees of the University of Guyana (UG) will resume duties on Tuesday March 03, ending a five-week industrial action by the University’s Workers Union (UGWU) and the Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA).

The unions met with their members on Monday, March 02 at the Turkeyen campus where they outlined and signed an agreement that was reached at the weekend on their Terms of Resumption (ToR) with the Ministry of Labour.

The agreement will see the Unions return to work with a 10% interim payout across the board among other measures. The increase takes effect from January 1, 2015 and further negotiations are set to commence almost immediately with a menu of options if negotiations sour, including conciliation and arbitration.

According to the ToR, staff who was part of the strike action will not be victimized in any way, suffer any loss in service, loss in pay for strike days or loss of work for the University, among other terms.

Meanwhile, President of the University’s Student Society (UGSS), Joshua Griffith in welcoming the move urged students to make contact with their lecturers so that teaching can commence on Tuesday.

He also expressed gratitude to the unions for bringing an end to the dispute.
