The National Assembly will be igniting with young minds when the fifth annual Youth Parliament activity commences next week, providing a platform for young people to learn about the highest decision-making body in Guyana.

Youth Parliament 2019 will feature 35 students from the secondary level between the ages of 14 and 17 along with 37 individuals from the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen and Tain campuses. The New Opportunity Corps (NOC) will also be participating in the sessions.

Public Relations Officer at the Parliament Office, Yannick December told media operatives on Monday during the official launch that there were many life skills attached to this initiative, but, most importantly, the aim was to create future leaders.

“The hosting of the fifth annual Youth Parliament is in consonance with the Parliament Office’s continuing effort to sensitise the citizens of Parliament and its functions and to mould future leaders. In addition to its sensitisation role, this activity will boost the students’ morale; and develop and own their leadership skills,” said December.

This year will focus on topics such as the Sovereign Wealth Fund, migration policy, single-use plastic, amendments of the Constitution, and copyright law among other pressing matters. Apart from acquiring leadership qualities, students will also be acquainted with public speaking.

Some former youth parliamentarians will be returning this year as mentors. Two former students of the St Joseph High School – Kunal Bridglall and Ruth Wilson – were part of the gathering during Monday’s launch and were looking forward to this year’s debates.

Students are selected for the Youth Parliament initiative after the Education Ministry would have assessed them.

These activities will conclude on August 17, 2019 and a prize will be awarded to the best debater. Throughout the 10-day event, visits will also be made to the public buildings and industrial plants.
