Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and Four (Demerara-Mahaica) have seen a rise in active Covid-19 cases, according to Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony.

To date, there are over 2050 active cases across the country, most of them originating from Regions Three and Four.

In Region Three, there are some 431 active cases with the community of Tuschen being a hotspot, the Minister said.

In Region Four, there are some 349 active cases in Georgetown with a lot of clusters in areas like Kitty and Sophia. Along the East Bank of Demerara (EBD), the communities of Grove and Diamond are considered hotspots with 56 and 47 active cases respectively.

On the East Coast of Demerara, there are 412 active cases in total.

Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), while not as severe as the other regions, is another district of concern for health authorities. According to the Health Minister, there are some 72 active cases there.

As cases continue to rise, Dr Anthony is encouraging persons to get vaccinated to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

There are over 100 fixed vaccination sites across the country with the first doses AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Sputnik V vaccines available in abundance.

Second doses for the AstraZeneca and Sinopharm are readily available while the second doses for the Sputnik V is coming in the country weekly.

Guyana’s immunisation campaign is also supported by some single-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccines which are intended for hinterland use. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are also available but these are being used to vaccinated the children population.
