[www.inewsguyana.com] – Newly appointed Chairman of local rum producing giant, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Komal Samaroo, during his symbolic installation on Thursday (January 2) says he does not support the abuse of alcohol.

According to him, DDL encourages the responsible consumption of all its alcoholic beverages and is against the use of alcohol to cause damage and create disorder.

The newly appointed Chairman explained that the company subscribes to all international best practices in the distribution of its products and maintains that alcohol should not be sold to underage persons.

Samaroo reminded of a previous project in that regard by the Company and pointed out there were some challenges in its implementation in some parts of the country.

Nonetheless, he said the Company intends to engage in a more aggressive approach toward its implementation in 2014. He told reporters that the Company understands its social responsibility and intends to uphold it.

He also pledged DDL’s support towards any efforts to provide rehabilitative services to drunkards.

Samaroo’s appointment as Chairman took effect as of January 1, 2014. He has been a Managing Director in the company for the last 30 years.

Over the past eight years, he has been building international markets for DDL in North America and Europe. He succeeds Dr. Yesu Persaud, who has served the company for over 48 years.
