[www.inewsguyana.com] – President David Granger has described Former President Hugh Desmond Hoyte,  as an example of selfless service to the people of Guyana and a man who possessed an acute awareness of the need to change the course of direction of the country, which verged on the brink of bankruptcy.

“Guyana remembers Desmond Hoyte, its second executive president, a patriot, with affection and respect,” President Granger said, in his address at a simple ceremony held on Tuesday at the Botanical Gardens to commemorate Hoyte’s 13th death anniversary.

A release from the Minister of the Presidency noted President Granger as stating that at the time of the General Elections of December 1964, Guyana was stagnant after seven years of mal-administration, noting that the country was financially bankrupt, economically backward and socially broken.

“Our first Prime Minister Forbes Burnham bore the brunt, repairing the damaged state. He led our country into Independence; built colleges, schools and the university; constructed a new airport, bridges, highways and rehabilitated our sea defences; initiated the vital Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary scheme; inaugurated huge housing settlements,” he said.

Hoyte served faithfully at the President Burnham’s side, ascending to the Office of Prime Minister and later to the Presidency; making him a part of the continuum even as it prepared him to confront the challenge of change, President Granger said.

“His execution of the portfolios as Minister of Home Affairs, of Finance; of Works and Communications; of economic development and of regional development was an education in national leadership and international statesmanship. Desmond Hoyte – during his presidential septennium from 1985 to 1992 – was able to employ this considerable experience, to deploy his personal expertise and to apply his abundant endowments and talents in the highest executive office. He continued to build on the foundation of the previous twenty-one years,” he said.

Hoyte’s tenure as President of Guyana coincided with the eclipse of the world socialist system to which Guyana subscribed. To this end, he positioned Guyana to take advantage of the economic reforms that swept the western hemisphere in the last decade of the 20th century, the President said.

“He promoted sustainable development and the protection and preservation of the environment. He opened the door to the shared governance which facilitated coalition-based alliances. Desmond Hoyte, today, remains an exceptional example of selfless service to the people of Guyana. His courageous economic choices have now become part of economic orthodoxy. His legacy is unassailable,” President Granger said.

  3. It was Hoyte who supported Burnham in the scrapping of the Railway Services of which the last Train ran from Mahaica to Georgetown in November 1972.It was Bartered for some TATA Buses with India then in 1973 the Oil Crisis started to rock The Economy then Burnham regretted about the Railway Services.
Hoyte brought back Flour in October 1986 which was banned in1983 at 67cents per pound and sold it at $2.50 a pound with the backing of Hamilton Green who said “they does pay five dollars a pound on the Black Market why they can,t pay two fifty?”despite the value of the Dollar was stable.
Hoyte gave Kaman Sankar the Lands that belonged to the Black People in Ithaca W.B.B.when he was the President in the late 80.s and it was Cheddi Jagan who gave back the Black People their Lands in 1994.
Hoyte ran the Economy in further turmoil then he took IMF Money to help pay Public Servants .The G$1.25=US$1.00 declined to G$10.00=US$1.00 Do you remember 10 to 1 is murder?
Hoyte is the one who supported the one and only brand of whole milk powder, Canada Best, thatwas in the country that you have to have a chit before you can purchase same ,and is only certain places uses to sell same and is only certain people get these chit that you had go in long line to get the milk.
Hoyte is the one who made all the bright and skillful people start running from the country.
And the list goes on and on…………………………
Desmond Hoyte “Persaud” suffered The Black People more when he was The President than any one else.

  4. My Messiah is Jesus Christ and not an earthly being. You are now using the race card by suggesting the people receiving handouts are of a certain ethnicity. Who is the racist here? What facts are you talking about?

  5. Burnham gave us the Mazaruni Hydro Power which we are enjoying
today in our dreams. He gave us Jonestown where a Massacre took place and gave us Guy lines for Kero Rice Sugar and Salt.Car line for Gasolene. He rape our Constitution again and again and run down Economy. He gave our children white mouths and we can go on and on.Also He gave us the( KSI) Knowledge Sharing Institute where only PNC Members could get Food Items and so on.aND WE ARE GOING BACK THERE.

  6. Side Kick the right path for you is the path of economic destruction-and that’s the path your messiah is taking. It has nothng to do with race but that’s all you can use you do not know the facts so you use the race card–If wasn’t for the PPP people like you would be starving.Take a closer look at the pic in the papers and see who is receiving handout—-

  7. Which HALL should Jagdeo, Ramotar and the whole corrupt PPP cabal be inducted. Look at what the various audits are revealing, corruption on an unprecedented scale. That is SHAME. New jails will have to be built to house these miscreants. An example must be set so that future generations will not try this again. Talk what you want about Hoyte, he was not corrupt. To some of you racists no one black should ever run Guyana. Hoyte is the person who set Guyana on the right economic footing.

  8. Hoyte introduced the Black clothes police and brought back hanging to catch those kick-down-the-door bandits who were deployed by a major opposition party in the 1980s to strike fear into Indians thereby preventing them from crossing over to PNC

  9. President Hoyte disappointed me as a citizen of Guyana on 2 counts… (1) when he became party to draping the coffin of Blackie with the Guyanese flag… which started a completely new round of social demoralization and decay (2) when he bluntly refused to continue the “talks’ that President Burnham eventually came around to seek as a strategic path of national development

  10. He also ran the country bankrupt and that is what people will remember. He also called on his supporters to apply “slow fia, mo fia” at the height of looting and burning in Georgetown after the PNC lost multiple elections. He will be remembered for that too. The kick down the door banditry swept the country under Hoyte’s tenure. People will not forget.

  11. President HOYTE should have been inducted into the world HALL OF SHAME! One of Guyana most corrupted politician along with Hamilton Green! Send Guyana into Bankruptcy by degrading the dollar value and collapsed the economy. Consistently rig elections by creating the Buxton Force to loot, steal and kill! Spread crime by forcing the dictatorship style of ruling. Green and Hoyte carefully planned the assassination of Walter Roodney & The murder of Green first wife who was poison while celebrating her birthday. What a shame to call this man a leader…He should be compared to hitler, saddam and gadaffi! This is the man responsibleof creating the Buxton Esso gas station criminal ring which was run by a gang leader that carried out so much looting/killing…It was until Roger Khan execute him then the local people could have walk into buxton to go visit the post office! Granger spare the people of the PNC regime….you want history…I just give you some facts.
