Porter granted $100,000 bail on fraud charge

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 47 – year – old Porter accused of fraudulently misappropriating a quantity of items in excess of $1M was granted $100,000 bail on Thursday, February 26.

Ken Stevey Hamlet of Lot 48 La Grange, West Bank Demerara made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Court heard that on May 09, at Aranka Landing, Cuyuni River, he was given a quantity of clothing and cosmetics, 10 pairs of sneakers and 10 pairs of slippers to deliver to Hannetha Rose, but he failed to do so; he instead fraudulently converted the items to his own uses and benefit.

Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant did not object to bail but stated it must be substantial and reporting conditions should be attached, due to the amount of money involved.

Hamlet will report every fortnight to the subordinate officer of ‘F’ Division, at Eve Leary. The matter was transferred to Bartica Magistrate’s Court for March 12.
