Five years jail for ex- policeman charged with illegal possession of gun, ammo

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Former Police rank was Thursday April 30 sentenced to five years imprisonment by Magistrate Judy Latchman for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Twenty-seven year-old Jerrel Huntley, of Lot 140 Lamaha Springs, Greater Georgetown, was found guilty of the charges after a trial was conducted.

One of the charges against Huntley stated that on March 11, 2014 at Barrack and Camp Streets, he had one 9 MM glock pistol, when he was not a holder of a firearm license.

The other charge stated that on the same day in question at the said location he also had in his possession 14 live rounds of ammunition without being a holder of a firearm license.

According to the prosecution facts, Huntley reportedly used the weapons to threaten his business partner Surendra Etwaroo.

The offender made his first court appearance during the month of March, 2014 and denied both charges.

Before handing down the sentence the city Magistrate took into consideration all mitigating factors, including, the seriousness, prevalence and penalty the offence attracts.

His five years sentence will run concurrently.
