DRUG BUST: 1,276 lbs compressed marijuana found in container

Local law enforcement agents at the John Fernandes Limited Wharf unearthed over one thousand pounds of compressed marijuana.
This was confirmed by Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) James Singh on Tuesday.
He said the illegal substance amounted to 1276 pounds and was found in a container that arrived in Guyana in May.
According to reports, agents from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Drug Enforcement Unit and the Container Control Programme (CCP) were inspecting the container which was said to be carrying heavy-duty machinery, when the marijuana was found in several packets.
The container contained sawmill equipment as well. This newspaper understands that the container, destined for Guyana, arrived here on May 16 from Jamaica but had originated from the United States.
Several persons, including the owner of the container, are being questioned in relation to the drug bust.
