Police have launched an investigation into reports of a brutal piracy attack at the mouth of the Waini River, some 10 miles into the Atlantic Ocean, off the Essequibo Coast, which allegedly occurred two Sundays ago.
Based on reports received, Boat captain Muneshwar Bissoon and 4 other crew members were in their cabin when they were alerted by the sound of another boat engine.
Upon checks, four masked men, two armed with large guns and two others with cutlasses jumped onto the boat and broadsided them. They were then forced to lie face down.
The captain was chopped to the left side of his head and the finger of another crew member was severed.
The pirates who spoke in Spanish as well as English robbed the boat men of two Yamaha engines, 4 12- volt batteries, 2 mobile phones and 3 drums of fuel, some fish material and food supplies among other items.
The pirates left the men wandering at sea for several days before they were rescued by another vessel. They were treated at the Mabaruma Hospital where and a report was lodged. The men are expected back home today.
