Vreed – En – Hoop Power Plant to begin commercial operations by July

Power Plant 3[www.inewsguyana.com] – During a tour of the facility on Friday (January 17) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Bharrat Dindyal said the Vreed – En – Hoop Power Plant is expected to be begin commercial operations by July 2014.

The plant, once completed will be connected to the nearby power station and is expected to increase the capacity from a current 87 megawatts to 106 megawatts in Demerara. Persons residing as far as Berbice are expected to benefit from the increased capacity.

The plant costs just over US $30M. Also on tour was Chairman of the Board of Directors Winston Brassington, Project Coordinator Lennox Macgregor, Divisional Director Narvon Persaud and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds among others.

The Prime Minister said he was impressed with the level of progress made in the construction of the plant. He said improvements from the way the other Wartsilla plants were set up could be noticed and said it was good that we have learnt from past experiences. Power Plant 2

According to the CEO, all the materials for the plant are still not on site because of storage constraints but noted that the majority of the larger materials are on site.

When the plant is complete, it will utilize the services of three generators and have the capacity to hold up to 12/2 barrel of fuel at any given time.

During the tour, Wartsilla engineers who are currently supervising the setting up of the plant using Guyanese labour could also be seen.
