The sister of Opposition Leader, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, died today at his home on the East Coast of Demerara.

At 57 years old, Ooma Jagdeo called ‘Shanta’, was described by him as a “second mother” and was the youngest of his sisters, but older than him.

On his Facebook page, Dr Jagdeo wrote: “It’s with deep sadness, I announce the death of my sister Shanta. She was the epitome of a sister, she was a mother, my confidant and friend. She took care of me all my life and I will miss her dearly.”

INews understands that Dr Jagdeo’s niece and nephew found her non-responsive this morning. He also disclosed that his sister, who was not married, lived with him for several years.

The Opposition Leader was on the ground leading the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Local Government Elections (LGE) campaign  in Region 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), when he received the sad news of her passing.

Having completed several grassroots-level meetings in Region 2 (Pomeroon/ Supenaam), Jagdeo cut short his work in Wakenaam and Leguan, where several other public meetings were scheduled, to be with his family.

INews  extends sincere condolences to the Opposition Leader and his family.
