Pomeroon farmer, 73, murdered by armed intruder- Police


Police are currently investigating the murder of Deonarine also known as “Russian”, 73, a farmer of Grant Maria’s Delight, lower Pomeroon River,which occurred about 18:30h on Friday allegedly by a masked male.

According to police PRO, Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, a 46-year-old female cleaner who shared a relationship with the deceased reportedly witnessed the murder and is in custody assisting with the investigation.

Their enquiries revealed that about an hour before the incident, Deonarine went to Charity Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, picked up the female and took her to his home.

As they sat at a table, the man reportedly went to answer a call at the front door and was confronted by the suspect who was said to be armed with a “long gun“.

The female reportedly intervened and held onto the suspect’s weapon while Deonarine ran downstairs. However, the suspect allegedly pushed the female aside, went after the deceased, shot him and escaped.

A gunshot wound was seen on his left side abdomen of Deonarine.

According to the police, the wounded farmer was rushed by boat to the Charity Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.

Police are currently seeking the masked male as investigations continue.
