Police officer charged with purchasing stolen car

Court[www.inewsguyana.com] – A police officer was released on self by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Tuesday, June 02 for the offence of receiving stolen property.

Twenty-four-year-old Collis Burnett of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, Canje Berbice, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him. It is alleged that between July 25 and December 5, 2014, at Sheriff Street, Georgetown, he received a Toyota Primo motor car valued $5M, property of Deo Persaud, knowing same to be stolen or unlawfully obtained.

Burnett was represented by Attorney-at-law, James Bond who told the court that his client is a serving member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and is married with two children.

Bond informed the court that Burnett was the purchaser and was placed on self – bail at the station. The matter was adjourned to June 30.

  1. Does this spell “conflict of interest”. Bond wears two hats, a politician and an attorney. Now here’s a case of him representing an alleged criminal cop, which counteracts his governments stance on tolerating these corrupt officers
