Cutlass bandits rob Chinese supermarket at Canje


Two Chinese nationals were Wednesday evening terrorized after masked and armed bandits carried out a brazen robbery on a supermarket at Canje, Berbice.

The men carrying cutlasses stormed the establishment located at Lot 109 Number 2 Village East Canje Berbice.

At the time Zhou Chunmine, 26, was about to close the supermarket which he operates with another Chinese National.

According to reports received, the two armed men walked into the supermarket and upon entry, one went straight to the cash register, stretched his hand over and removed what is believed to have been the day’s sales.

The bandits also managed to cart off with a bag containing $210,000.

One of the men demanded more money while the other stood guard. During the ordeal, the bandit who was keeping guard collected in excess of $100,000 in phone cards.

INews understands that Zhou and his uncle; China Sang, 43, had earlier placed the bag with cash and phone cards under a quantity of wood in a store room.

One of the owners was still in the storeroom and was on a ladder when the store was attacked.

After committing the robbery, the bandits escaped on foot.

This publication was informed that one of the men received several chops during the robbery and was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was treated and sent away.

Meanwhile, Police have since been able to obtain surveillance footage of the robbery and several persons have been questioned.
