Copyright laws are again high on the agenda for the hosting of Carifesta X1. The Carifesta secretariat is on alert to deal with those issues to protect the end products during and after the events.

Coordinator for the Film committee at Carifesta X1 in Suriname, Enrico Woolford is of the view that whatever works are being sent out to the regional and international medium; it is the responsibility of the Carifesta Secretariat to safeguard them.

He noted that Guyana has the 1957 copyright Act which needs to be updated. He also made mention of Rudy Grant taking a company to court for a violation of copyright properties.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony related that the piece of legislation is a very complicated one in which a number of ministries are engaged.

Dr. Anthony stated that for the passage of the copyright legislation to happen there must be consensus in the Parliament.

He is of the view that persons need to change their behavior and how they consume the cultural products which are produced. [Nickhail Jaundoo]
