Police are presently interrogating a Rosignol, West Bank Berbice pensioner who allegedly killed his reputed wife on Tuesday evening after hours of physically abusing her at the home they shared.

The dead woman has been identified as Shabana Babita Ishack, 40, of Lot 69 Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice.

While details remain sketchy, Police “B” Division Commander, Lyndon Alves told INews that the matter was reported at about 07:15hrs today (Wednesday).

“We don’t have much details at this time. The suspect is in custody. It is alleged that this incident happened between 18:00hrs last evening to about 07:15hrs this morning when it was reported,” he said.

This online publication was informed that the duo resided together and on the evening in question, they were seen imbibing in their yard.

However, at about 17:00hrs, neighbours alleged that the 62-year-old suspect began to physically abuse the woman, for reasons unknown.

The beatings reportedly prolonged into the early morning hours of Wednesday.

INews gathered that on Wednesday morning, a concerned neighbour went to talk to the couple about their constant fighting, and it was then that the accused let her into the home, requesting that she check on “Shabana.”

It was then that the woman was discovered motionless, with her neck appearing to have been broken.

A report was immediately made and the suspect allegedly remained quiet and seated on a bed in the home, until ranks arrived to arrest him.

Police in a subsequent statement on the murder said that the pensioner has since “admitted to beating her severely with pieces of wood and an iron bar because his meals were not properly cooked.”

It was further related that the victim, reportedly a heavy consumer of alcohol, started a common law relationship with the suspect about three months ago.

The body is presently at Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing. (Ramona Luthi)
