Berbice pedestrian killed by allegedly speeding minibus

Hours before stepping into the New Year, a 39-year-old Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice man lost his life following a fatal accident on the Bath Settlement Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

The dead man has been identified as Laikram Singh of lot 175 Block D, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.

Based on information received from the police, the accident occurred at around 18:30hrs On Sunday while Singh was in the process of crossing the public road from south to north.

He was reportedly slammed into by an allegedly speeding minibus, BVV 2961, which was being driven by a 25-year-old, Belladrum Village, West Coast Berbice, resident. The minibus was said to be proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the road.

Singh was flung several feet away and picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police have confirmed that a breathalyser test was administered on the 25-year-old driver and he was not found with alcohol in his system.

Nevertheless, he remains in custody as the investigations continue.

A post mortem examination on Singh’s body is expected to be conducted on Wednesday.
