Following his apprehension in Suriname, a prison escapee was on Monday charged with the capital offence of murder by Magistrate Alex Moore at the New Amsterdam  Magistrate’s Court.

43-year-old Rickford LaFleur of Smithfield New Amsterdam (NA) was not required to plead to the indictable offence which alleged that on May 1, 2011, while on remand at the New Amsterdam Prison, he murdered Sebastian Cleto.

The matter was adjourned until December 08, 2017.

The murder accused was serving time for the murder of Cleveland Hetmyer called ‘Water Dog’, and trafficking in narcotics, when he escaped during a prison break in June 2011, but was recaptured in Suriname by law enforcement officials last week.

According to media reports, LaFleur and others between April 27, 2011, and May 4, 2011, at the New Amsterdam Prison, murdered 24-year-old Cleto, alias ‘Short Man’, of Wortmanville, Georgetown.

The deceased was allegedly beaten unconscious with pieces of wood and died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was being treated.
