The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has said that the reason for the discoloration in the water which some persons, living in Georgetown, may have experienced on Friday can be attributed to the negligence of their workers.

According to GWI in a release, the workers, instead of applying the requisite amount of chemicals to treat the water, were asleep.

See full statement below:

The Guyana Water Incorporated wishes to inform the citizens of Georgetown that during the shift of 23:00hrs (11:00pm) June 30 to 7:00hrs (7:00am), July 1,2017, failure to apply the chemicals at the required dosage to ensure discoloration is removed from the water, which may have been observed by citizens, was due to the negligence of three officers. The officers were discovered to be sleeping during the period.

Despite information being shared with the three officers by the lab that the colour was deviating from normal, no action was taken. Hence, residents would have received the discoloured water from 3:00am to 12:00 noon.

GWI has been able to correct the problem and sincerely apologises for any inconvenience the negligent actions have caused.

GWI remains committed to providing a service of quality water that is aligned to the standards set out by the World Health Organization.
