Woman charged for smuggling marijuana in toilet paper

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Sharon Campbell, 39 of Section ‘C’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for trafficking narcotics.

DSC06086She pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on Thursday, January 23 at Light and Charlotte Street, Georgetown; she had in her possession 24 grammes of marijuana.

Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant told the Court that the defendant went to River Crest Shipping Company to post several package to the Mazaruni. During a procedure check, it was observed on a bale of toilet paper that three rolls were replaced with black plastic bags containing weeds, seeds and stems.

She was told of the offence and offered to bribe the Security Officer with money. However, the officer refused and the matter was reported to the police.

Attorney- at – Law, Clyde Forde represented the accused and told the Court that Campbell said his client was asked by a friend to post the package to the interior when the illegal substance was found.

The lawyer said that his client suffers from hypertension and denied any knowledge of the marijuana.  The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the defence lawyer did not provide the court with any special reason why his client should be granted bail.

The objection was upheld and the matter was transferred before Magistrate Fabayo Azore for tomorrow.
