Winning start for Top XX at opening night of Bank GT Beer Cup

March-Pass1[www.inewsguyana.com] – Top XX opened with a 1-Nil win against Amelia’s Ward Panthers to kick off the start of the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) 2014/2015 GT Beer “Supa 16” football tournament on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden.

The game started with few thrills as the fans in attendance were rewarded with the game’s only goal in the 9th minute from Duquan Hercules.

Meanwhile, at the opening ceremony, 16 teams featured in the march past accompanied by remarks from the Minister of Public Service, Dr Jennifer Westford; Region 10 Chairman, Sharma Solomon; Banks DIH Limited Communications Manager, Troy Peters; GFF Technical Director, Lyndon France and President of the UDFA, Collis Grith.

Westford also performed the ceremonial kick off ahead of an exhibition match played between two veteran teams from the mining town representing North and South.

The Minister congratulated the executives of the UDFA for organising the tournament and urged members of the community to attend the matches.

Minister Westford thanked main sponsor Banks DIH Limited for supporting the tournament. Peters said that Banks DIH Limited is committed to the development of sports in Linden and he commended the UDFA for organising the tournament against the backdrop of other tournaments being hosted around the country at this time of the year.

The competition continues on Wednesday evening with a double-header card at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.

Blueberry Hill FC will battle Canvas City Vasco at 18:00h, while the second game will bring together Block 22 Goalgetters and Ituni Peacemakers at 20:00h.
