A Venezuelan citizen was on Friday sentenced to six months imprisonment by Magistrate Leron Daly when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for stealing from a businesswoman.

Luis Marques admitted to the charge after it was read to him.

It is alleged that between July 1 and July 2, 2018 at Water Front, Port Kaituma he stole $410,000 from Sabrina Johnson.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, Marques went to the woman’s shop to buy a backpack and she left him alone in the shop after someone called her outside.

When she returned, Marques paid for the backpack and left.

The businesswoman then later discovered that the money was missing from her shop and reported the matter to the Port Kaituma Police Station.

Marques was subsequently arrested and the money was found on his person.

In his defence he told the court that he took the money to buy himself clothes.

Marques will be deported after serving his six months sentence.
