A 27-year-old Venezuelan National, Isaias Rojas, was killed this morning after being pinned down by the motor lorry he was travelling in, which toppled along the roadway at Queenstown on the Essequibo Coast.
The accident occurred at about 10:46 hours on the Queenstown Access Road.
INews understands that at the time of the accident, Rojas and another Venezuelan national were in the tray of Motor Lorry GAJ 7403 along with the driver and another male occupant in the front seat.
The driver told the police that it was raining while he was proceeding East along the Queenstown Access Road, and while crossing over a wooden bridge, he lost control of the vehicle.
According to the driver, the rear of the motor lorry slipped off and resulted in the vehicle toppling into a nearby rice field on the southern side of the said access road, during which Rojas was pinned down.
The motor lorry was subsequently removed from the rice field, and the injured man was picked up in an unconscious state. Rojas was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors on duty.
His body was escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
Meanwhile, the driver of the motor lorry, a 34-year-old resident of Hoff en-Aurich, Essequibo Coast, has since been arrested and taken to the Anna Regina Police Station, where he was placed into custody assisting with investigations.
A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and revealed a reading of 5% microgram.
