US Citizen slapped with three year sentence for cocaine

[www.inewsguyana.com] – United States Citizen Rueben Lang was today April 16, sentenced to three years imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for the latest drug bust at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA)

The twenty-seven-year-old man pleaded guilty to the charge that said on April 16 CJIA Timehri, he had in his possession, 692 Kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru related that on the day in question ranks from the narcotics branch were monitoring passengers on Caribbean Airline Flight BW 524, destined for John F. Kennedy Airport, USA.  

During this time, Lang placed two suitcases on the baggage scan and it was observed that several plastics packets were taped to the top and bottom of the suitcase. Further checks on the packets revealed a ‘whitish substance’ which was later tested and proved to be cocaine.

Lang was told of the offence and he replied under caution that the said drug belongs to him and that he is trying to make additional money.   

The unrepresented man told the court that he is a poor security guard who is trying to survive.

 Lang was fined $1.5M together with the jail term.
