Update: Surinamese remanded for murder of DJ Cheddie

A man was today remanded to prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry for the murder of popular DJ Sheldon Cheddie.

Thirty – three – year old Omar Williams of Paramaribo Suriname was not required to plead to the capital offence of murder.

The court was told that on September 09 at Tucville Georgetown, Williams murdered 37 – year – old Sheldon Cheddie of Jackson Street Tucville Georgetown. Since investigations are not yet completed into the murder, the Magistrate remanded Williams until October 18.

The Court heard that on September 09, Omar Williams attacked Sheldon Cheddie with a gun and fired several shots towards him after which he tried to escape.

Williams was apprehended by friends of the late DJ and public spirited citizens who gave chase after the shooting. He was beaten and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and was discharged hours later; after treating lacerations about his body.

The now dead 36 – year – old was shot approximately seven times by two men on bicycles at about 20:30 hours at the turning point, Tucville.  Cheddie was immediately rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. [Royan Abrams]
