Fire destroyed the middle section of the L’ Aventure Secondary school on the West Bank of Demerara. The fire started around 7:30 hours today and according to reports, the fire service responded promptly.
Students, who were on their way to school had to return home, while those who were already in the building had to rush out to save themselves.
A large group of residents in the area assisted the teachers to put the fire out, but were unsuccessful.
699 students will now have to await word from the Education Ministry as to how they can continue with their academic studies. Chief Education Officer Olato Sam visited the site this morning and told the media that the teachers and students will be informed about plans for the resumption of classes on Thursday September 5.
