Teen fined $80,000 after admitting to stealing colleague’s salary

A 17-year-old of Kingston, Georgetown, was on Friday fined $80,000 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of theft.
The teen admitted to carrying out the act when Magistrate Leron Daly read the charge to him.

He admitted that between July 31 and August 1, 2017, at Kingston, Georgetown, he stole $80,000 cash property of Damascus Grant.

According to the prosecution’s case, the Virtual Complainant (VC) and defendant work together and on July 31, 2017, Grant collected his salary together with other monies and placed it in the pocket of his bag which he then secured at the said place of work and proceeded to go clubbing.

However, upon his return the following day, at around 09:30h, he checked his bag and observed that the money was missing.

A report was made at the Police Station and the defendant was arrested and questioned. He admitted to stealing the cash and as such was charged with the offence.
When questioned as to why he stole the money, the defendant said he was “sorry” for what he did.

Magistrate Daly fined him the said $80,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in him serving six months in prison.
