The 31-year-old taxi driver whose vehicle was used to transport the body of Simone Hackett, today made his first court appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where he was slapped with a murder charge and remanded to prison.
Appearing before Magistrate Zamina Ally, Ranachal Singh, of Lot 7 Good Faith, Mahaicony, was not required to plead to the charge which read that between April 16 and 19, at Cummings Lodge, he murdered Hackett.
Singh’s lawyer, Jerome Khan, argued that the life of his client and his family members had been threatened for a murder he did not commit.
The taxi driver was remanded to prison by the magistrate who scheduled his next court appearance for May 18.
Hackett had been missing for three days when her body was discovered by teenagers who were en route to school. Her body was discovered in a trench at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD) with a slash to her throat and stab wounds to her neck.
Underneath her body, a cutlass was found. Relatives had initially opined that her ex-boyfriend was the mastermind behind her disappearance and murder since the two were having disputes over the custody of their three-year-old son.
Hackett’s child’s father, Clevon Hamilton, only one week prior to her disappearance had threatened her life. While in police custody, he confessed to killing the woman and it was later revealed that Singh was his alleged accomplice.
