SWAT team will not be like the ‘black clothes’ – Brumell

[www.inewsguyana]Police Commissioner, Leroy Brumell has given his assurance that the Guyana SWAT team will not be like the dreaded ‘black clothes’.

When questioned about the setting up of the SWAT Team on Monday October 7, following his confirmation as Police Commissioner, Brumell said that the selected persons have been thoroughly interviewed.

“I can assure you that my Deputy Commissioner of Law Enforcements is one of the persons taking them through the process to ensure that we get the right type of persons. I can assure you that as long as it comes into being, it will not be a black clothes,” Brumell told members of the media.

He explained that the team comprises of members of the Guyana Police Force, who were selected based on their first service, their abilities as it relates to dealing with persons. There are no outside recruits, Brumell assured.

On October 2, cabinet gave its no objection to the setting up of the unit. A press release from the Ministry stated, ““With a SWAT Unit, the Guyana Police Force would be better placed to make specialized interventions, thereby, ensuring law and order is maintained, and prospective threats are neutralized.”
