Special Crime Unit to be fully operationalised in 14 weeks

Crime unit[www.inewsguyana.com] – The government had adopted a turn-key approach that will see the operationalising of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) in about 12-14 weeks, according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon.

Speaking at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing, the HPS said that the phase of this turn-key approach would see the rehabilitation of a building immediately south of the Central Immigration Office on Camp Road, Georgetown which is the intended headquarters of SOCU.

Funding for the execution of the rehabilitation works has been approved by Cabinet as well as a five-member investigative staff complement.

However, in the interim, Cabinet has proposed the temporary assignment of an office space at a site to be determined. This would allow for the immediate entry into operations of the investigative and prosecutory arm against money laundering offenders.

SOCU is a non-parliamentary recommendation that is part of the second round of reviews by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF). It is intended to be Guyana’s response to its treaty obligation to investigate suspicious financial transactions that are related to money laundering.

It will be dedicated to the investigation of suspected financial transactions suggestive of money laundering and financing of terrorism.

  1. This is an imposition forced upon the government designed to target PPP supporters! The government should reject this imposition. It is designed to take billions of dollars out of the Guyana economy and make president Jagdeo’s economic policies look ineffective. Already 17% of our GDP come from remittances(through official sources) perhaps 23-25 in real terms, then if they remove the laundered funds the economic future of Guyana will be bleak. Guyanese might have to go back to it latrines that president Jagdeo fought hard to move us away from.

  2. more pnc supporters will be employed and nothing ever changes..will be business as usual after the home moon over in 3 months or less..pppc vision is to employ lots of pnc supporters in every institutes all across Guyana..even if they have no qualifications..
