Several activities planned for this year’s Independence anniversary celebrations

Guyana’s 50 +1 Independence anniversary will be filled with numerous activities which will illuminate the country’s cultural diversity. Youth related activities will be included since Youth Week under the theme, ‘Inspiring our youth, celebrating our achievements’ coincides with the country’s Independence Anniversary, GINA said.

This was disclosed during a press conference held at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, today.

National Events Director, Lieutenant Colonel Godfrey Bess, said that the events will include an inter-faith opening ceremony concert, youth expression, and career and training exhibition. There will be a 50+1 ceremony held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) on May 24 for the purpose of distributing trophies to those who were born on May 26, 1966. The flag raising ceremony will commence from 22:30hours at D’Urban Park on May 25, and includes a colourful 30 minutes of cultural display which will culminate with the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead and fireworks display.

He highlighted that printed flyers and flash cards will also be distributed at the ceremony, sensitising citizenry in Guyana of the benefits in keeping the government’s ‘Green Economy’ agenda.

During May 23 to 25, there will be a literary and fine arts exhibition held at the NCC, and a guided school tour of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) water treatment plants, which will create awareness among the students about the process involving water treatment.

Colonel Bess said that the agency also plans to hold a grand farmers’ market, cottage industry and small business exhibition which will be held at D’Urban Park, commencing at 08:00hours on May 27.

This event will be providing fresh and processed agricultural produce, as well as plants and livestock that include ducklings and live chickens among others. It will also provide information about the different stages and aspects of agro business.

The career and training exhibition will also be held at the housing expo in Perseverance, East Bank Demerara. Director of Youth, Melissa Carmichael said that the department has confirmed 56 organisations which will help youths in their career choices, employment and even providing scholarship opportunities.

There will be no parking allowed on Homestretch Avenue between Vlissengen road and East of D’Urban Park during the Independence event. However, the parking for spectators will be allowed at Vlissengen road on the eastern part between Homestretch Avenue and Hadfield Street, as well as on the northern side of Hadfield Street, GINA said.
