Sailor feared dead after being caught in fishing net at sea

A sailor is feared dead after his feet got caught in a fishing net and he fell overboard at sea off of Waini Mouth, North West District, Region One (Barima-Waini).

The man has been identified 45-year-old Vickram Hardowar of Uitvlugt Village, West Coast Demerara.

The police said the incident occurred sometime 04:30h on Monday.

Hardowar was a part of a six-member crew which included Nazim Hossain, age 50 years, a boat captain of Zeelugt East Bank Essequibo; Faruk Khan, age 46 years, a sailor of Zeelugt East Bank Essequibo; Cecil Henry, age 33 years, a sailor; Errol Roberts, age 48 years, a sailor of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, and Imran Roberts, age 20 years, a sailor.

It was reported that Hardowar was tossing their fishing seine in the ocean some 65 miles offshore when his feet got entangled with the said seine and he fell overboard into the ocean.

His co-workers, upon seeing what transpired, tossed two life jackets into his direction and was in the process of turning the boat around when they heard him shouting for help three times before going silent.

They searched the area but could not find him.

As a result, they went to the Morawhanna Police Station and reported the matter. They are presently at the Mabaruma Police Station assisting with the investigations.

A search party is currently deployed to the said area.
