DSC05285[www.inewsguyana.com] – Twenty – five – year old Alfred Benjamin of Charlestown, Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry charged with robbery underarms. Benjamin pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on October 5 at St Phillips Church, he was armed with an ice pick, which he used to attack and rob Kevin Joseph of a cellular phone and $1,000 cash.

Police prosecutor Bharrat Mangru told the court that the complainant was standing on Durban Street when he was confronted by the accused, who attacked him with the ice pick.

The prosecutor said the complainant tried to escape but was pursued by the accused and as a result he raised an alarm, which alerted a plain clothes officer who apprehended the accused.

Based on the seriousness and prevalence of such crimes, and the fact that the accused was before the court for the possession of gun and ammunition, the prosecutor objected to bail. Bail was refused and Benjamin was remanded to prison until October 18. [Royan Abrams]
